WHAT IS IT What is Micro-Dermabrasion. Micro-dermabrasion is a minimally invasive advanced facial resurfacing treatment that uses a diamond tip hand-piece to gently polish away the superficial layer of dead skin cells on the skins surface, revealing the underlying younger more radiant skin. The diamond tip hand-piece is coupled with suction, creating negative pressure and pulling the skins surface gently into the hand-piece as it glides over the skin. This resurfacing technique not only exfoliates the dead skin cells, but helps with acne and congestion as cellular debris and pollutants are extracted from the pores, helping revitalise dull looking skin. This initiates a reparative response within the skin that normalises epidermal (skin) thickness and promotes fibroblasts (cells) to deposition new collagen and elastin fibres, improving the appearance of sun damage,  fine lines, age spots, acne scarring and other skin-related concerns. The negative pressure also increases blood and lymph circulation and strengthens blood vessels as the gentle pressure helps pull extracellular fluid into the tissue, improving the over-all health of the skin. It is especially effective at resurfacing dull-looking skin complexion, normalising cell turn-over and giving a beautiful dewy glow. WHAT TO EXPECT What to expect from Micro-Dermabrasion. This is a minimally-invasive procedure that is generally pain-free and has next to no down-time. It can be carried out on all skin types The use of an AHA for two weeks leading up to the treatment can increase its efficacy Micro-dermabrasion is a gentle facial rejuvenation skin treatment carried out in a medi-spa setting on a salon treatment table   Firstly, a deep cleanse will be carried out to ensure the skin is free of oil, debris and ready for the treatment  An alcohol swab is passed over the cleansed face to kill bacteria and help minimise the risk of infection The microdermabrasion treatment will then begin. The technician will hold the skin tight while systematically passing the micro-dermabrasion handle over the face in a gridded fashion. The procedure itself is relatively pain-free however it is common to feel as if the skin is sunburnt post-treatment Each area is passed over twice. Up, down. Left to right.  A nourishing vitamin B serum is applied at the end of the treatment to help soothe the skin. Vitamin B is a powerful nutrient that plays an important role in mitochondrial energy metabolism within the cell, helping to improve cellular function. It is also beneficial for barrier function as it boosts the production of the cell outer membrane.  A broad spectrum SPF is then applied to help protect the damaged skin from UV radiation and the possibility of a pigmentary response. SPF should be worn at all times, especially for the first week post treatment as the barrier function is impaired. The skin will be red and sensitivity post treatment. This typically clears within 24 to 48 hours For best results the patient should be treated every 2 - 4 weeks for 4 - 6 treatments, depending on the condition of the skin
